You open your wardrobe and spend well over half a day looking through for something to wear only to flop on your bed in sheer exasperation because you can’t find anything to wear? How about having an important job interview to attend, but the only suitable options you have are either ‘track’ or ‘birthday’? If these scenarios sound painfully familiar and hit a bit too close to home, then have we got some bad news for you…it’s time for a wardrobe makeover, mate.
We have all been there. The thought of going shopping, dealing with the judgy apparel shop attendant, navigating through isles and isles, bins upon bins, and racks over racks of clothes to find cute outfits or spending hours running to and from the changing room and thinking that you would look better in something a shade lighter, then finding it and not liking how you look in it.
Don’t even get us started on the times when you go into a clothes store for one thing and then end up looking at literally everything else, only to leave at the end of the day either buying everything except the original thing you were looking to get or, even worse, not buying anything at all!
So here are the 10 signs that it’s time for you to get new clothes!
1. Clothes no longer fit
This first one is, honestly, quite straightforward. You excitedly pull out one item after another to find something you like. When you finally find it and try putting it on, you are hit with instant disappointment…they have gotten too small…or, conversely, you’ve grown a little too much for it.
2. Wearing clothes that look more suited for an older person, the mom jeans
Ah…that good old vintage, classic, retro look. There is a distinction between looking old and old-looking. What we want here is something that harkens back to days of yore with stylings and patterns of that particular era, but not so much that we look like we went back through space and time and bought an outfit from the disco era…actually, now that I think about it, those bell-bottoms could be fun…but you get the point.
3. The Fuzz
Oh, you know this one. It’s those little balls of fabric that clumps up all over your clothes after having used it for a million years. Yep, that is a surefire sign that you have to get rid of it…or at the very least, repurpose it into a dishrag or something because using it when it is so worn is literally inhumane and can be considered torture under the Geneva convention.
4. Comfy, comfy, yoga pantsu
Oooooh, that stretchy, comfy, I-can-laze-all-day-in-bed uniform of the couch potato. While we do have our off days and don’t always have to look good, especially these days with working from home and all that, it is still not a valid justification nor an excuse to be wearing your yoga pants twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. At least get multiple pairs if you really want to go down the yoga pants lifestyle. That’s not a fashion thing, it’s more of a we-are-worried-about-you-and-care-about-your-hygiene thing.
5. Jeans have holes in them
We all know jeans are notoriously indestructible and could very well give cockroaches a good run for their money in outlasting a nuclear fallout, but should you find that your jeans are starting to have holes in them, and not by design like those torn jeans, then that means you’ve worn it so much that it is starting to get worn out and it is high time you had it replaced.
6. Last shopping date?
So, when was the last time you went shopping for clothes? If your answer to this question can be measured on one calendar, then it’s probably still safe to wear them in public. However, if you find it hard to recall the last time you went shopping for new clothes, then it’s probably a good idea to update your wardrobe.
7. Drab
Put on any of your outfits. Now, look at yourself in the mirror, do you get excited looking at how you look in the mirror? If you do, that’s good and you can skip this one. If, on the other hand, you don’t like how you look and feel that it looks drab or boring, then it is time for you to go shopping. Your clothes should make you feel excited to wear them, like a kid getting locked in a toy or candy store over the weekend (bad parenting? Maybe. But imagine getting to play with all those toys or munching on all that candy).
8. Did I buy that?
“Where is that sweater I got five birthdays ago?” Or “I know that pair of trousers are in here somewhere”. We have all been there and faced that vanishing closet before. There are so many articles of clothing in there that you lose track of what clothes you’ve bought before and, at times, some of those clothes get lost under or behind the newer additions.
This one isn’t so much a call for a makeover in the sense that you need to update and upgrade it, more of a sign that you need a makeover to take those unused and out-of-style articles of clothing out of there and perhaps onto charity or the needy.

9. That looks cute, where can I get that?
So, you are walking down the street and you happen to glance at someone sporting an adorable fedora or halter top, or even a sleek leather jacket? What will be worrying is if you started thinking that you would look good in that same article of clothing that caught your attention. That is a subconscious sign that even you know, on some level, that none of what you currently own excites you as much as that other thing you saw. It is a sign your mind is trying to tell you that you need a wardrobe upgrade.
10. Is that what you are wearing?
Have you spent hours picking out an outfit, or, if you are like me, just threw on whatever you felt was sensible (a polite way of saying that it does not smell) only to have your partner look you up and down, smirk, and say – “You’re not going out for dinner with our friends wearing that, are you”?
Well, that’s, first, a signal that you should go back into that wardrobe and pick something else, but is also another sign that you should get some new threads.
If you find yourself in any of the ten categories…or even worse…in ALL ten categories, then consult your nearest fashion-savvy friend immediately. Alternatively, some things do not need remedies as drastic as throwing them out or burning them and buying new replacements. Some old plain dri fit shirts can be given a new lease of life by having a custom logo or design printed onto it to give it that much needed…je ne sais quoi.
