Step 1 – Open closet.
Step 2 – Say that you have no clothes to wear.
Step 3 – Have your friend/partner/husband/sister/somebody say “But you have hundreds of clothes in there! So much so that the sides of your closet are now bulging!”…okay, that last snarky bit is optional, but, admit it, that’s why it’s funny.
Step 4 – Take out your phone or laptop or tab and browse for pretty clothes.
Step 4.1 – Alternatively, you could go out to the shops and look around all the shops for new clothes.
Step 5 – Wear those new clothes once.
Step 6 – Wash those clothes after having worn them.
Step 7 – Once dried, fold them and put them in the aforementioned closet.
Step 8 – Lather, rinse, repeat back to step 1.
Oh, hello there, dear reader, we didn’t see you there. We were just ruminating on our rituals and those steps above are just our routine for when we have some big gathering we have to attend…and then standing in front of our closets for about an hour looking at it thinking of all the reasons why we can’t possibly wear any of those (for some of us here, that portion is actually us looking for reasons why to go shopping…as if we need an excuse, #amiright?).
However, if you’re like some of us here and more of a tee and denim sort of person, then let’s give your wardrobe a splash of vitality to breathe a new lease of life into your old well loved clothes.
Today, we’ll be looking at custom printing and how to stylise those old tees for you to rock up in coolness. Yes, you read that right. Custom printing your own designs and cool. How has nobody thought of this awesome combination before now?
Tattoos
Right off the bat, let’s make a strong impression. You know that tattoo you think looks so cool on some biker on the telly? Think about the logic or logistics (if you can call it that) behind that tat. It’s ink on a blank canvas…a blank, porus, epithelial, sweat and sebum producing, pain-nerve and blood containing canvas called the human skin.
Now, remove the human portion of that and substitute it with the vast plain blankness of a cotton canvas that is your old t-shirts.
Of course, if you think the old skull and crossbones are somewhat too gauche for your tastes and…cough…Asian sensibilities…then perhaps, look to the symmetrical and often mesmerising designs of the old Nordic tattoos. Hey, even those old Celtic ones look awesome! Also, we promise we won’t judge if Ancient Hieroglyphs are your jam.
Thing is, getting tattoos don’t just have to be on your skin anymore. It’s the 21st century after all (specifically 2022), you should be able to get tattoos wherever you want, whenever you want, however you want. So, why not custom print it on an old t-shirt?
Text
Yes, yes, this one is a bit of a let down after the awesomeness of the tattoo idea, but hear us out.
You’ve seen people getting tattoos with Asian characters, right? Especially those Caucasians (also locally known as Ang Mohs). Maybe they’re on to something there.
Now, we’re not asking you to go out and put the Chinese character of “Soul” or the Korean character of “Kimbab” because it looks cool…well, maybe it’ll look cool to someone who doesn’t read or understand that character, but why stop at just singular characters is our point.
Why not go with inspirational lines to tell yourself “You are worth it” or “You are loved”. Well, whatever line you choose to go with, try to go positive (there’s enough negativity in this world right now, don’t go adding to it)…also, don’t go cliche with “Eat, pray, love”, please.
Hand Drawn Doodles
Imagine Garfield with a text bubble, but saying something that you want to say instead of “I hate Mondays”. Well, yes, we all harbour strong feelings for Monday in one form or another, but remember what we said about cliches?
To that point, Garfield was just an example. Doodle your own character to have that unique persona to your old t-shirt and make it edgy enough to catch eyes while eliciting smirks wherever you go. Now, that’s perfection.
Memes
Hey, should all else fail, everyone loves their memes. Grab one off the net, lay it out on your t-shirt, front and centre, and voila – A funny tee that people can relate to…or, at least, you’ll have them staring at you wondering what meme that’s supposed to be and where they’ve seen it before. Either way, mission accomplished and it’s not something most people would think to put on a t-shirt.
So, head on over to 9Gag or download your own meme creator app and get cracking onwards with your creative endeavours. After all, one does not simply walk around with a meme covered shirt in Singapore.
Everything
This last one isn’t an idea, but more of a suggestion, really. Just put everything that we mentioned above into your t-shirt! An illustration, a tattoo, a meme, some texts, it’s overkill, yes, but that’s what people said about the tie-dye when it first came out. So, we’re not going to discount it as a possibility just yet.
Closing Words
Now, at this point, you should have enough inspiration to know what to do with your old t-shirts. Use one, use two, use them all if you need and just have fun going wild on the design.
