Whether you are the student or the cooking master in the class, the apron plays equally important to each of this role. When finding new aprons, the first three things you need to identify are pretty basic since you already know where you will be wearing it to. However, in case you need to use it in other places, knowing where to start would be useful. Here are the four main aspects you need to take into account. The examples will mainly revolve around the topic of kitchen iron since that is what this article is about.
Purpose
Since it is for cooking, you are most likely to be working near places and your apron is more susceptible to catch on fire. Hence, you may want to avoid cotton apron or one with too many embellishments. Make sure it is washable too. The first thing you need to ask is what you will be using the apron for. Different aprons have different benefits, so you need to identify your priorities. In a busy restaurant kitchen, you are most likely going to need a strong apron that can not only protect your clothes from food stains, bit also withstand excessive use or wear & tear.
Place
Consider how much you move around in the kitchen. If the restaurant you work in has a large kitchen and you are often moving from one side to the other, you may want to get an apron that has pockets, so you can store tools and small items in your apron and do not need to constantly walk back and forth or misplacing items.
This point is meant to elaborate on where you will be wearing the apron. Why should the area, too, matter? One word: temperature. As I’m sure you already know, things can get real ‘heated’ in the kitchen. While personal kitchens normally do not reach extreme temperatures, you still need protection from heat. It doesn’t seem like it would matter much, but you will feel a huge difference when your aprons are able to keep you cool.
Mobility & Style
This should go without saying, but we’ll still put this among the main three basics for a reason. Depending on your role in the kitchen and also what kind of kitchen it is, the style of your apron may matter more than you think! Appearance almost always matters, especially if you work at the front area of a restaurant. Dark-coloured aprons are more practical and are better at hiding stains more effectively. If you will not be facing customers in your apron, be more creative with the style! Choose something simple or be extra – whichever works for you, works! That said, mobility should be prioritised more than style. If they restrict your movement, the good look is not worth it.
Fabric material
This is arguably one of the (if not THE) most important aspects that will determine the overall quality of your apron. Cotton, being the most common fabric, is not water-resistant. Quite contrary to everything else mentioned above, not being water-resistant is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, this type of fabric is ideal for baking or cooking involving mainly dry ingredients. If you are particularly looking for waterproof aprons, keep in mind that they may be heavier and tougher – which would not feel as comfortable on your body. If you are just working in a small kitchen with very little ‘heat-inducing’ activities involved, you can stick to lighter fabrics like cotton or muslin. When it comes to the fabric material, appearance is nowhere near it. Sure, leather aprons look sleek, but you are wearing it at what cost? Your movements are restricted and you are carrying a heavier load on your body.
