It’s that time of the year again, if you are a Southeast Asian, or someone who lives in the region, you would know by heart that October is the start of heavy downpour in this region. Plus, our monsoon season is pretty much the equivalent of winter since it can get really chilly! Which means, more dirty laundry to take care of and you might need to keep those fashionable clothes of yours in the cupboard until the monsoon ends. What? Are you disappointed that you won’t be able to dress to your heart’s content in this condition? No worries fam, we got you. These are our top five ways to stay trendy during rainy reasons!
- Hoodies!
Well, you know what they say. There is no better way to stay warm during this cuddle weather than a comfy, long-sleeved hoodie. Plus, they also make you look stylish if paired well! We would recommend wearing grey or warm coloured hoodies to complement the weather. Not only that it’s a good fit for the weather, but the cold and chilly weather around your hoodie would also present a charismatic aura about you. “Calm and composed in the cold”. We gusta!
- Wear Warm, Stay Cool!
Wait what? How? How does it make sense? What is this fashion monstrosity? Calm down, we are here to help! By wearing warm, we recommend you to wear clothes to keep you warm. Which means, your T-shirt, custom t shirt or shorts are a no-no. The nature of those clothes are meant for better air ventilation and to allow cooling. Which is the exact opposite of what you need! Plus, they also make you look out of place. So tailor your fashion sense based on this chilly weather. A pair of sweatpants and sweatshirt complemented by a beanie would be great for the occasion. The added bonus? It gives you the cool sporty vibes!
- Choose Clothes That Suit Your Body Type
Some of you guys might have the guns to proudly show to everyone, some of you might also be insecure of the extra pounds you put on recently. Well guess what? This rainy season is a huge blessing in disguise! Nobody would judge you for wearing baggy clothes. In fact, feel free to unleash your inner Billie Eilish! Those kinds of clothes are IN this season. But do make sure to tailor them in accordance to your size! If you have wide shoulders, wearing a shirt one size bigger than you would make you look taller. Worried about the clothes being too linear? A good ol’ sweatpants would make you look cute!
- Mix and Match!

Ahh yes, the trusted and reliable mix and match! Feel free to experiment to your heart’s content! We would highly recommend long jeans and sweatpants over shorts during this condition. You can never go wrong with matte jeans or black long pants. They would fit into any colour schemes and are highly flexible in your mix & match sessions! Simple, yet effective. Just the way we like!
- Leather Boots All Day, Boots Every Day!
By boots, we don’t mean the iconic yellow boots of Phua Chu Kang or Boots The Monkey from Dora The Explorer, nor football boots too (they are called cleats by the way). Get yourself a nice warm leather boot for rainy wear. They are durable, fashionable and most importantly the cost of maintenance from time to time is quite cheap! Perfect for everyone and those on a tight budget.
- Get a Proper Raincoat/Rain Suits
Some raincoats or rain suits might put a drab on your outfits, they are practical, but boring! However, that is not necessarily the case all the time. After all, you’re the master of fashion! Pair them with your outfit, choose a raincoat with colours (or colour) that would fit your fashion sense and need. Instead of wearing them the usual way, you might want to button or zip them up halfway in order to match it with your inner wear. Maybe wrap them around your waists (sweater style!) or wear them on one side, let your creativity go crazy!
- Windbreakers!
Windbreakers and hoodies are of similar ilk but the windbreaker has an edge in terms of flexibility. They are good for runs or jogs and they possess an added benefit of withstanding rain! Perfect for sportsmen/women or those with an active lifestyle. Plus, windbreakers are mostly lightweight and water-resistant. Hence, they promote better performance and extra comfort. While extremely low weather might not occur here in Southeast Asia, it’s better to be prepared than not at all! Windbreakers are great for delaying hypothermia (a condition which stems from the body losing heat faster than it can produce, causing a dangerously low body temperature).
- Go with Vibrant Colours!
While some people might opt for matte or cold colours to fit in with the atmosphere, you can never go wrong with vibrant colours as well. However, do make sure that the colours are not too flashy or it might end up being an eyesore to you or everyone else! There is nothing worse than having an expensive piece of clothing laying around and unused due to its inconvenience. Plus, rainy days are monotonous and gloomy as it is, you might want to spice it up by painting more hues with your outfit!
While it is nice to be warm and be trendy, it is also important to note that being healthy is always in trend! Always remember to bring your umbrella or raincoats out during this season! Stay safe and always be prepared by keeping tabs on the weather’s forecast.
